We must protect this harmonious vitality of life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The concept of &#8220;born of Heaven, completed by Earth&#8221; (\u5929\u751f\u5730\u6210, ti\u0101n sh\u0113ng d\u00ec ch\u00e9ng) is reflected in the Kun hexagram, where things reveal their inherent beauty. &#8220;Containing beauty within, one may remain steadfast&#8221; (\u542b\u7ae0\u53ef\u8d1e, *h\u00e1n zh\u0101ng k\u011b zh\u0113n*).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now, what is this &#8220;\u7ae0&#8221; (zh\u0101ng)? Does it refer to an &#8220;article&#8221; as we write today? No. Let me pose this deliberately: How is the character &#8220;\u7ae0&#8221; constructed? What is the top component? Many think it&#8217;s &#8220;\u7acb&#8221; (l\u00ec, to stand) above &#8220;\u65e9&#8221; (z\u01ceo, early). Is this correct? Does &#8220;standing early&#8221; (*l\u00ec z\u01ceo*) mean &#8220;article&#8221;? Does &#8220;written first&#8221; equal true composition? Absolutely not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The character &#8220;\u7ae0&#8221; consists of &#8220;\u97f3&#8221; (y\u012bn, sound\/music) on top and &#8220;\u5341&#8221; (sh\u00ed, ten) below. It signifies<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>&#8220;a harmonious composition formed by ten musical scales&#8221; \u2014 a process that is rhythmic, melodic, and profoundly unified. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Thus, &#8220;\u542b\u7ae0\u53ef\u8d1e&#8221; (h\u00e1n zh\u0101ng k\u011b zh\u0113n) teaches that<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>once harmony is achieved, one should preserve it. Beauty is held within (h\u00e1n zh\u012b), and at this stage, it becomes the &#8220;Great Beauty&#8221; (\u5927\u7f8e, d\u00e0 m\u011bi).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why is this beauty not ostentatious but instead restrained and latent? Generally, we distinguish between &#8220;a woman of true beauty&#8221; (\u7f8e\u4eba, m\u011bi r\u00e9n) and &#8220;a merely pretty woman&#8221; (\u6f02\u4eae\u7684\u4eba, pi\u00e0oliang de r\u00e9n). The latter refers only to external form \u2014 surface appearance that cannot be magnified, much less revered. True beauty arises when internal qualities manifest externally. It is an aura, a vitality that radiates from within. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Consider Wang Ximeng\u2019s A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains (\u5343\u91cc\u6c5f\u5c71\u56fe). Though I have examined the painting closely, I have not explicitly found the principle of &#8220;\u542b\u7ae0\u53ef\u8d1e&#8221; within it. Yet we all recognize that Wang created profound beauty through this work \u2014 though he died tragically young.
