This is an aspect we won\u2019t delve too deeply into here. Within the beauty of imagery, there is also the aesthetic influence of \u201cestablishing form to fully convey meaning\u201d and the artistic conception. For instance, the blending of the northern style and artistic imagery is ubiquitous in China, especially in Tang poetry and Song lyrics. When Chinese people speak, they use imagery\u2014their world is one of imagery. Take Ma Zhiyuan\u2019s \u201cSky-Clear Sand,\u201d for example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWithered vines, old trees, twilight crows;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Small bridge, flowing water, people\u2019s homes;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ancient road, west wind, lean horse;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Evening sun westward goes;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Heartbroken one at sky\u2019s end roams.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Every line is a layering of imagery. If you translate this into a foreign language, like English or any phonetic script, its beauty vanishes. The poem then becomes a mere cognitive exercise and loses its meaning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now, transitioning from imagery to artistic conception: \u201cIn heaven, it forms images; on earth, it takes shape\u201d\u2014only then can a realm be born. This is my understanding. Look at the term \u5883\u754c (jingjie, realm): both characters individually mean \u201cboundary,\u201d but when combined, they transcend boundaries, embodying infinite possibilities. The highest realm in the Book of Changes is to \u201calign virtue with heaven and earth, match brightness with the sun and moon, and harmonize order with the four seasons.\u201d I originally intended to skip this part, but it speaks to the cultural beauty of the Book of Changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you internalize this\u2014apply it to your inner world, your mental space, your consciousness, your emotional realm, your creative expression\u2014I believe a entirely new world will emerge. And what counts as imagery? It\u2019s everywhere. All the hexagram statements, each one, is presented through imagery.
