Xiao Huang: DOORM, what is the structure of the human neocortex like?
DOORM: The human neocortex is the outermost layer of the brain, a relatively thin two-dimensional structure about 2.5 millimeters thick. Compared to other animals, the neocortex of primates has evolved to have complex folds, which increase the surface area of the cortex. The human neocortex makes up 80% of the brain’s weight and features a large forehead, providing a foundation for a larger neocortex. The frontal lobe is the area that processes more abstract patterns related to higher-level concepts.
