Xiao Huang: DOORM, what is the layered structure of the neocortex?
DOORM: The neocortex consists of six layers, numbered from I (outermost) to VI. Neurons in layers II and III project their axons to other parts of the neocortex, while axons in layers V and VI primarily establish connections between the neocortex and the thalamus, brainstem, and spinal cord. Neurons in layer IV receive synaptic inputs from neurons outside the neocortex, particularly from the thalamus. The number of layers varies slightly in different regions, especially in the motor cortex and the occipital lobe.
