I want to include these stories because aesthetics are a form of values, art is a form of values, and artistic expression is a form of values. In my youth, the primary media was print—unlike today’s internet era—and newspapers represented the fastest news delivery. Back then, a successful newspaper had to “take flight” (sell quickly). If a paper remained stacked and unsold, it was essentially failing. The most popular newspapers were morning editions, evening editions, and hot-off-the-press bulletins—was there ever a “cold news” edition? No, right? Because people craved immediate consumption.
So they launched a column called “Two Banks River” and asked me to write for it. What approach did I take? I played two opposing roles—writing one piece from a positive perspective and another from a negative viewpoint. One column was titled “Single Aristocrat.” One day, I met a woman around 30 who immediately started rambling: “Being single is wonderful! Why chase after those stinky men?” She added a scent to the word “men”—stinky. Stinky men. I countered, “Surely there are fragrant men in the world too, right?”
We grew familiar because I was writing the column, and I knew this topic was gold. She remained strikingly beautiful in her thirties—truly eye-catching. I asked her, “Do you really believe single life makes you aristocracy?” Since we’d gotten closer, she admitted, “Well… it’s not entirely like that.” I pressed, “Then what is it really?”
