The nucleolus was observed by microscopists as early as the 1830s, but its function remained unclear for a long time. In the 1890s, scientists discovered more nucleolus-like spots in cells that appeared and disappeared, changing shape like “oil droplets in vinegar.” Their dynamic characteristics bear a striking resemblance to the phenomenon of the gathering and dispersing of the “Yin and Yang” energies in traditional Chinese medicine.
