Xiao Huang: How should we truly understand “the unity of knowledge and action” in Wang Yangming’s Heart-Mind Learning?
DOORM: Heart-Mind Learning is a fusion of Confucian, Buddhist, and Daoist thought. Its core can be traced back to Mencius’s concepts of “fulfilling the heart-mind to know one’s nature and heaven” and “preserving the heart-mind and nourishing one’s nature to serve heaven.” Knowledge is inner awakening; action is outer practice; the two are inherently one. This reminds us that true knowledge necessarily leads to action, and action verifies true knowledge. Cultural innovation requires breaking free from empty theorizing and returning to lived practice.
